Limestone is sea shells that are crushed, it is a grey/white colour, it is quarried out of the ground, good for making bulidings and is virtually insoluble in water(acid rain is a problem though).

There are por's and con's for quarring limestone. Here are the PRO's

  1. Provides Houses and Roads
  2. Dyes, Paints and even medicines
  3. Neutralise acid soil and even some acid lakes
  4. Provides jobs for people
  5. Once the quarring is complete landscape restoration is part of the contract

Here are the CON's

  1. Huge holes that make the site look unattractive
  2. Ouarrying process makes noise and dust in quiet senic areas
  3. Destroys the habitat of many animals
  4. The limestone needs to be transported away and therefore means more noise and pollution
  5. Waste materials create unsightly tips.

This is a tricky topic to fight against and for becausr you have to see the ecoomic and soical factors. Is it worth keeping the countryside pristine if people have no where to live and no roads but also should animals lose thier homes instead?
