The First Russian Revolution:Why It Started
63
The main question Why It Started? can also be rephrased as Was It Inevitable? because there are plenty of reasons why the Russian revolution started but what were the conditions that made it written in destiny.Usually a revolution is not caused by one thing but many reasons and most of the time lots of different people are to blame. Most of these lead to a revolution because the Tsar looses control over the army and economic problems.
Here is a short timeline to some of the main reasons why the revolution started...
1900 Massive poverty amongst peasants. Most were loyal to the Tsar but some supported the Social Revolutionaries who wanted to take land from the Tsar and the Nobles.
1904 Disastrous war with Japan leads to food shortages, high taxes and demands for higher wages.
1905 Striking workers in St.Petersburg march to Palace asking for food and better living conditions shouting "Long live the Tsar" but sadly soldiers shoot 1000.This is known as the Bloody Sunday Massacre
1905 Reactions to Bloody Sunday Massacre lead to mutinies in navy and a strike by 3 million and there are rumours of a revolution.
1914 WWI is not good for Russia. Millions die, prices rise, food runs out and people blame Tsar for the defeats.
1917 Strikes and Demonstrations break out against the war. Police and army begin to side with protesters calling "Down with the Tsar". A soviet is set up as a alternative government to Tsar.
